Teen arrested for stabbing, attempting to sexually assault stranger in Cheongju

A teenager has been arrested in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, on charges of stabbing a woman in her 20s and attempting to sexually assault her.

The Cheongju Sangdang Police Station said Monday it had arrested the suspect, identified only as A, a minor, on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes — specifically aggravated rape causing bodily injury.

A is accused of stabbing a woman, identified as B, in the side with a bladed weapon in an alley in Mochung-dong, Seowon-gu, Cheongju, at 11:34 p.m. Sunday, before attempting to sexually assault her. The two had no prior acquaintance.

When B screamed and resisted, A fled the scene on a motorcycle.

Officers who responded to the emergency call tracked A through closed-circuit television footage and apprehended him in Sachang-dong, Seowon-gu, roughly three hours after the attack.

B received hospital treatment and her injuries are not life-threatening.

Police plan to seek an arrest warrant after questioning A about his motive and other details of the crime.
