NST appoints new heads of electricity, nuclear research institutes

The National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) appointed Kang Sang-hee, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Myongji University, and Jung Woo-sik, a professor in the Department of Quantum and Nuclear Engineering at Sejong University, as the new presidents of the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, respectively, at its 249th extraordinary board meeting Monday. Their three-year terms begin Tuesday.

Kang earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Seoul National University in 1985, a master's degree in 1987 and a doctorate in 1993, both also in electrical engineering from the same institution.

After joining Myongji University's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering as a professor in 1994, he served as director of the Next-Generation Power Technology Research Center and as organizing committee chair of the autumn academic conference of the Power Technology Division of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Jung earned a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering from Seoul National University in 1987, a master's degree in nuclear engineering from KAIST in 1989 and a doctorate in nuclear engineering from KAIST in 1993.

He worked as a senior researcher at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute from 2002 to 2014, before joining Sejong University's Department of Quantum and Nuclear Engineering as a professor in 2014. He has since served as a non-standing director of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and as a council member of the Korean Nuclear Society.
