People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Young-ha on Monday criticized "The Assassin(s)," a film depicting the assassination attempt on former first lady Yuk Young-soo, saying it "crossed the line."
In a Facebook post that day, Yoo said leftists commonly argue that fiction is grounded in imagination and falls under freedom of expression.
He said the film, directed by Heo Jin-ho, "cleverly distorts historical facts to portray the late President Park Chung-hee as the true mastermind behind the shooting of former first lady Yuk Young-soo."
Yoo said the film "twisted clear facts, distorted history and gravely damaged the reputation of the late President Park Chung-hee," calling it "an act of moral depravity that drives a nail into the hearts of surviving family members who still carry the searing pain, and a betrayal of our history."
"This film has clearly crossed the line and cannot be forgiven for any reason," Yoo said. "There will inevitably be consequences."
