Plans for Soongsil University campus in Mungyeong fall through

Plans to establish a Soongsil University campus in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, have in effect collapsed.

Mungyeong city said Monday that Mayor Kim Hak-hong visited Soongsil University in Sangdo-dong, Seoul, on Sept. 16 and met with the university's president. The two sides acknowledged that establishing a Mungyeong campus was no longer feasible but agreed to explore other avenues for mutual cooperation and exchange.

The city launched a committee to attract a Soongsil University campus to Mungyeong in 2022 and had been pursuing discussions on merging the two institutions. Soongsil University, however, signaled that the plan was not viable given internal conditions, including the need for member consent and a board resolution.

"As the ninth term of elected local government gets under way, establishing a Soongsil University campus in Mungyeong is realistically difficult," Mayor Kim said. "But I will do my best to promote Mungyeong more widely and build a better future for the city through more substantive and active exchange and cooperation."
