The Ministry of Personnel Management on Tuesday appointed Kang Myung-su, former standing commissioner of the Korea Trade Commission under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as industry and economy vice mayor (vice minister-level) of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City.
Kang is one of two nationally appointed vice mayors for the city, a position filled by presidential appointment. He will be stationed at the eastern branch office and oversee industrial and economic affairs.
A native of Naju, South Jeolla Province, Kang holds a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree from the Graduate School of Public Administration, both from Seoul National University, as well as a doctorate from the University of Missouri. He entered public service in 1992 through the 35th class of the national civil service examination.
He previously served at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy as director of the exports and imports division, the biotech-nano division and the information and communications policy division, and later held posts at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy as director general for trade cooperation, spokesperson and standing commissioner of the Korea Trade Commission.
The other nationally appointed post, administrative vice mayor, was filled by Hwang Ki-yeon, former administrative vice governor of South Jeolla Province, who was appointed Sept. 19.
Two political vice mayor posts have been nominated and are awaiting confirmation hearings before the city council: Baek Seung-ju, candidate for balanced development vice mayor, and Yun Nan-sil, candidate for civic sovereignty vice mayor.
