Seoul Metro said Tuesday it would "establish a staffing plan that ensures safety based on the results of an organizational review," addressing concerns over safety risks stemming from workforce reductions at subway depot facilities.
The agency was responding to a claim by lawmaker Kim Min-seok that roughly 2,000 positions had already been cut while the Seoul Metropolitan Government was pushing for further reductions. Seoul Metro said it is conducting an organizational review aimed at eliminating safety incidents and improving workforce management. Labor and management agreed to the review in December last year, and it began in May this year.
Seoul Metro added that it had adjusted overlapping positions when two agencies merged in 2017, and has since managed staffing levels to reflect changes in maintenance workloads resulting from line extensions and increases in rolling stock.
