Foreign worker in his 30s dies at Banpo reconstruction site

A foreign worker in his 30s was killed by falling concrete debris while cleaning at an apartment reconstruction site in Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction disclosed Wednesday that a worker died after being struck by concrete debris at the DH Classt construction site on Tuesday.

According to the disclosure, a worker carrying out concrete-breaking work had evacuated the victim from inside a unit before dropping debris from the ceiling. The debris fell outside the expected range and struck the victim.

The victim was a man in his 30s with Kazakh nationality. He was conscious when taken to hospital but later died.

"We halted construction immediately after the accident and are cooperating with police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor as they inspect the scene, while working to establish measures to prevent a recurrence," Hyundai Engineering & Construction said.

The Banpo DH Classt development is being built on the site of the former Banpo Jugong Apartment Complex District 1, sections 1, 2 and 4, and will comprise 5,002 units upon completion.
