Korea Institute of Construction Machinery, Hanyang University partner on next-generation equipment research

The Korea Institute of Construction Machinery and Hanyang University have agreed to collaborate on developing next-generation construction equipment technology and training specialists in the field. The partnership aims to combine the institute's testing infrastructure with the university's research talent for joint R&D, amid accelerating technological shifts toward unmanned and intelligent construction machinery.

The Korea Institute of Construction Machinery signed an MOU with Hanyang University at the university's new main building Wednesday to strengthen research and development capabilities in construction machinery and convergence technologies. Under the agreement, the two institutions will cooperate in four areas: technology and information exchange in promising future sectors of construction machinery, mutual use of research and testing infrastructure, joint planning and operation of specialist training programs, and general information sharing.

At the core of the partnership is linking the institute's construction machinery research, testing and certification infrastructure with Hanyang University's engineering and IT research capabilities. Specific joint research projects and talent-development programs will be determined through a separate working-level consultative body that both sides will establish.

Research on applying unmanned and automated technologies to actual construction sites has been expanding in the construction machinery sector. Last year, Korea Expressway Corporation conducted a demonstration of earthwork automation technology at the Korea Institute of Construction Machinery's test site, showcasing a system that integrated and coordinated large construction equipment — including bulldozers, rollers and excavators — without operator intervention. Hanyang University also participated in that national R&D project.

"Construction machinery is an important field that can expand into future industries such as deep-sea and space applications," said Ahn Jin-ho, Hanyang University's vice president for research. "We will work to build a substantive cooperative relationship between the two institutions and generate meaningful results."

Korea Institute of Construction Machinery President Kim Jeong-dae said the collaboration with Hanyang University would "serve as a foundation for enhancing the future competitiveness of the domestic construction machinery industry through practical joint research and personnel exchange."

Following the signing, the two institutions plan to establish working-level consultative bodies by area and identify specific cooperative projects, including joint research and talent-development programs.
