Ulsan Hwajung Community Welfare Center's woodworking group
delivers custom-made furniture to vulnerable households
The Ulsan Hwajung Community Welfare Center delivered handcrafted furniture to vulnerable residents in the area Wednesday, as part of the "Veteran Plus" project funded by the Community Chest of Korea's Ulsan chapter and carried out by a resident woodworking volunteer group.
Veteran Plus is a community project in which middle-aged and older residents of Dong-gu, Ulsan, with skilled trades make and donate goods needed by vulnerable households in the area. Three volunteer units are currently active under the project: a sewing group, a woodworking group and a cooking group.
Eight members of the woodworking group gathered that day to deliver eight pieces of furniture they had built together — including bedside tables, a dining table and storage cabinets — along with bundles of daily necessities such as tissue paper and detergent, purchased through the participants' personal donations.
"There is real meaning in residents using their own skills and talents to make and share things for neighbors in need — it shows how individual talent can flow back into the community as an act of giving," center director Kim Yong-seok said.
