Competition open to construction site workers, contractors and supervisors
Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) said Thursday it is seeking outstanding examples of construction culture innovation to improve public perception of construction sites and boost worker morale.
LH has been running a "Construction Culture Innovation Best Practices Competition" since Sept. 21. The contest, the first of its kind aimed at construction site workers, was designed to counter negative perceptions surrounding the industry — including young people's reluctance to enter construction, an aging workforce and a growing share of foreign workers — while raising morale among those on the job.
Anyone working at an LH construction site is eligible to enter, including workers, contractors and supervisory teams. LH employees are excluded from participation to ensure fairness.
Submissions are organized around three themes meant to capture positive change at construction sites: "organizational vitality," showcasing cases where workers connect and enjoy their time together; "community support," highlighting efforts to assist and coexist with local residents; and "nature and site scenery," featuring diverse landscapes encountered on the job.
Entries will be accepted through an online submission form until Nov. 6. Winners will be announced Dec. 2 following judging by an external panel.
Awards — including grand prizes, excellence prizes and encouragement prizes — will be given in each category, with total prize money of 4.7 million won ($3,500). Grand prize and excellence prize winners will also receive a commendation and plaque from the LH president.
Winning entries will be used to produce and distribute promotional materials through LH's SNS channels and displayed on construction site fences, with the aim of sharing and spreading a positive construction site culture nationwide.
"Through this competition, we hope to boost the pride of workers at construction sites across the country and contribute to establishing a positive construction culture and a more vibrant industry," said Lee Sang-jo, head of LH's Smart Construction Safety Division.
Meanwhile, LH also said Wednesday it had significantly strengthened its reporting and reward system to root out illegal subcontracting at construction sites.
