Daegu Gansong Art Museum's 'Woori San, Woori Geul'
Experience traditional landscape painting through touch
To mark the Hangul Day holiday, Daegu Gansong Art Museum has organized a program that blends traditional painting with hangul to spotlight the originality of Korean culture. Spanning tactile experiences, expert lectures, children's workshops and traditional music performances, the lineup is designed to bring the legacy of Korea's cultural heritage to visitors of all ages.
The museum announced Thursday that it will run a special week titled "Our Mountains, Our Script, Our Sound" through Sunday. Alongside its current exhibition, the week features Hangul Day–themed education sessions, traditional music performances and audience participation events.
The museum's ongoing special exhibition, "Gyeomjae Jeong Seon — Painting Joseon Through Joseon's Eyes," surveys the artistic world and personal character of the Joseon-era master through 216 works. Visitors can explore how Jeong Seon captured Korea's natural landscapes through his distinctive perspective and original brushwork techniques.
Timed to the exhibition and Hangul Day, the education program "Woori San, Woori Geul" (Our Mountains, Our Script) invites participants to experience Jeong Seon's true-view landscape painting alongside hangul. Using their fingertips, participants can feel the textures of mountains, rocks and water as rendered in his works, then use hangul stamps to imprint verse that complements the paintings, creating their own personalized poem-inscribed artwork. The two-part program runs daily through Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the first-floor visitor guide desk and is open to all without prior registration.
Alongside this, the museum will offer additional education programs during the exhibition period to deepen visitors' understanding of Jeong Seon's art and his true-view landscape style. "Gansong Arts Lecture," an in-depth program for adults, will be held Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Nov. 25, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each session. "Nado Gyeomjae" (I Am Jeong Seon Too), open to students in fifth grade and above, pairs appreciation of Jeong Seon's works with hands-on traditional ink painting guided by Korean painter Jang Byeong-eon; sessions run Oct. 15, Oct. 22, Nov. 21 and Nov. 28, also from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both programs require advance registration through the museum's website.
In the outdoor Bakseokmadang courtyard, the museum will host a traditional music performance, "Our Mountains, Our Script, Our Sound," on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Produced in collaboration with the Daegu Korean Traditional Music Association, the concert will interpret nature through chamber music, gayageum, pansori and samulnori.
Side events include a poster giveaway — the first 40 visitors to verify they follow the museum's social media account by Friday will each receive a poster — as well as a photo booth offering free four-cut portrait sessions for visitors who complete a survey, available daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (excluding the lunch break) throughout the exhibition period.
"We have prepared a rich lineup of Hangul Day holiday programs — combining our script and our sounds — to complement the special Jeong Seon exhibition, where visitors can discover the true beauty of Korea's mountains and rivers," a museum official said. "We hope everyone who visits during the holiday will come away with a deep appreciation of the beauty Jeong Seon's true-view landscapes convey and the genuine value of our cultural heritage."
