Ko Min-jung vows to hold application agency accountable for inadequate system management
A warning that applications could flood in near the deadline was sent to Uwayapply, the agency handling university early admissions applications, on the very day its system crashed last month, it has emerged.
According to documents obtained from the Korea University Education Council by Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Ko Min-jung of the National Assembly's Education Committee, the council sent emails to Uwayapply and Jinhakpply on Sept. 11, the day the outage occurred.
In an email sent at 11:31 a.m. that day, the council said it expected "applications and linked registrations to concentrate during the remaining time before the deadline" and asked both agencies to monitor the situation continuously and respond promptly.
The council also noted that membership sign-ups and common application submissions were running below the same period the previous year, and warned that applications and linked registrations would likely concentrate even more heavily than usual in the final hours before the deadline.
"A preparedness request was made at the council level, yet the early admissions application system still broke down," Ko said. "We will thoroughly examine whether the accident occurred because Uwayapply failed to manage its systems adequately and respond in advance, and we will hold those responsible accountable."
