The district held a scholarship certificate ceremony at the district office's main auditorium to mark the 30th anniversary of its scholarship committee, honoring members for their work nurturing local talent and encouraging students to pursue their goals.
Gwangjin-gu held a ceremony Tuesday at the district office's main auditorium to mark the 30th anniversary of its scholarship program, presenting certificates to 101 students selected this year.
The event was organized to reflect on three decades of scholarship work, express gratitude to committee members who have supported local talent, and encourage students as they pursue their goals. About 120 people attended, including scholarship recipients, their parents and committee members.
The district expanded its selection this year to reach more students. Following an application period in July and a review process that included eligibility checks and a subcommittee screening, it selected 101 recipients — 54 more than last year's 47 — and will provide a total of 300 million won ($224,000) in scholarships.
The recipients include 31 students in the arts and physical education who demonstrated talent and competition results, 69 general scholarship recipients who showed academic commitment despite financial hardship, and one student who achieved a perfect score on the College Scholastic Ability Test. The general scholarship group comprises 27 high school students and 42 university students.
The ceremony opened with a commemorative video and a progress report tracing the program's history and achievements. It continued with the presentation of donation funds, the awarding of scholarship certificates, congratulatory remarks and a group photo, reaffirming the spirit of community-driven giving that has sustained the program.
The Gwangjin-gu Scholarship Association has consistently provided scholarships to support outstanding local students since its founding in 1996. In 2006, it established a formal scholarship committee to manage the program on a more systematic basis.
"I am deeply grateful to the committee members and donors who have come together over the past 30 years to support students' growth," Gwangjin-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said. "I hope these scholarships serve as a solid stepping stone for students as they take on new challenges. We will continue to do our utmost to nurture talent and support education so that students can prepare for their futures without the burden of financial hardship."
