Sentence finalized after 102 unauthorized absences
Military Manpower Administration to review service period, facility
Song Min-ho, 33, of the K-pop group Winner, will be required to fulfill his remaining military obligations after his suspended prison sentence on charges of neglecting his social service duty was finalized. The Military Manpower Administration said it has decided he must re-serve and will review the specific length and assigned facility before notifying him.
The agency confirmed Friday that Song's first-instance ruling had been finalized, triggering the re-service decision. "We will comprehensively review the precise re-service period and assigned facility based on the court ruling, then notify him accordingly," an agency official said.
The Military Manpower Administration had earlier said the relevant department was reviewing procedures to proceed with re-service following the finalization of the ruling. On Friday, it officially confirmed that Song would be notified of the details.
Song served as a social service worker at a facility management corporation and a residents' welfare center in Mapo-gu, Seoul, from March 2023 to December 2024. He was indicted on charges of violating the Military Service Act after leaving his post without justification for 102 days.
Judge Seong Jun-gyu of Seoul Western District Court's Criminal Division 10 sentenced Song to one year in prison, suspended for two years, on Oct. 1. The ruling was finalized after Song did not appeal. The Military Manpower Administration had previously said that once a ruling was finalized, the individual would be required to re-serve a period equal to the number of days absent without leave.
On Thursday, Song posted a handwritten apology on SNS, saying he would "faithfully carry out the remaining procedures and obligations."
