Event held Wednesday at small library Cafe Sup inside Gyeongdong Market, hosted by the district family center and backed by the World Citizens Forum; Chinese traditional dance, a multicultural children's orchestra and a multinational choir filled the stage
Dongdaemun-gu in Seoul held its 2026 Autumn Evening Concert on Wednesday, bringing multicultural families and local residents together through music.
The Dongdaemun-gu Family Center organized the event, which was sponsored by the World Citizens Forum and held at Cafe Sup, a small library inside Gyeongdong Market.
Marriage immigrants, children from multicultural families and neighborhood residents attended, sharing an evening of culture and conversation in the cozy setting of the traditional market.
Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min opened the concert with a warm address. "I am delighted that a meaningful gathering of harmony has been created, where residents from different cultural backgrounds speak with one voice through beautiful melodies," he said. "I hope the stage that our children prepared with such dedication will bring warm comfort and joy to all residents on this autumn night."
A pre-show performance by Baekhwacheongja, a Chinese traditional dance group, drew an enthusiastic response from the audience. The main program featured Symphony of Junior, a children's orchestra of multicultural family members affiliated with the family center, and Haengbok Meari, a multinational choir. Both delivered harmonies that moved the crowd on the autumn evening.
District Mayor Choi stayed for the entire program despite a busy schedule, applauding and encouraging the children and residents throughout, adding to the spirit of unity the event sought to foster.
Dongdaemun-gu Family Center Director Han Mi-young said it was a meaningful occasion to share with local residents the music that the center's children and multicultural families had worked so hard to prepare. "I am deeply grateful to the World Citizens Forum for their support," she said. "We will continue to create diverse opportunities for multicultural families and the local community to connect and come together through culture."
District Mayor Choi, who watched every performance, said he was deeply moved to see the children and residents connect through music. "Dongdaemun-gu will spare no effort in providing thoughtful support so that all residents can respect their differences and live together in harmony, transcending barriers of language and culture," he said.
