Power fails to save par after tee shot finds rough
Austin Smotherman of the United States claimed the PGA Tour Butterfield Bermuda Championship title after a three-hole playoff.
Smotherman defeated Seamus Power of Ireland in the playoff at Port Royal Golf Course (par 71) in Southampton, Bermuda, on Monday (Korean Standard Time).
The final round was canceled due to strong winds, leaving the 54-hole score to determine the champion. Smotherman and Power had both finished at 16-under-par 197 to force the playoff.
The first two playoff holes, both played on the par-3 16th, ended in pars for each player, leaving the outcome unresolved. The third hole proved decisive. Smotherman hit his tee shot onto the green and two-putted for par. Power, by contrast, found the left rough off the tee and, though he reached the green with his second shot, missed his par putt. He ultimately made bogey, handing Smotherman the title.
The victory came just weeks after Smotherman claimed his first PGA Tour title at the Bank of Utah Championship earlier this month, giving him two wins within a month and raising his career total to two Tour victories.
South Korean player Roh Seung-yul finished in a tie for 17th at 10-under-par through three rounds. The cancellation of the final round left him with no opportunity to improve his standing.
