Yeungnam University of Science and Technology held a launch ceremony Monday for its specialized college development project at the convention hall on the first floor of Cheonma Square.
Through the initiative, the university will move forward with efforts to reform its academic structure and vocational education system, with a focus on semiconductors and physical AI.
About 50 faculty members attended the event, including President Lee Jae-yong and academic affairs committee members, from six specialized departments and divisions: the mechanical and automotive division, the electrical automation department, the ICT semiconductor and electronics division, the AI logistics automation department, the AI software department, and the cybersecurity department.
Participants shared information on the project's background and goals, plans for restructuring the specialized departments, industry-linked curriculum operations, and student employment support strategies. They also discussed the roles and cooperation plans for each department to ensure the project's success.
The Ministry of Education selected Yeungnam University of Science and Technology for the specialized college development project on Oct. 12, and the university is set to receive about 10 billion won ($7.55 million) in support over five years from 2026 through 2030.
Through the project, the university has set its core vision as becoming "a university where employment at core companies is the reason students choose it."
To that end, it will concentrate resources on developing six departments and divisions as specialized programs: the mechanical and automotive division, the electrical automation department, the ICT semiconductor and electronics division, the AI logistics automation department, the AI software department, and the cybersecurity department.
"Through this project, we will strengthen company-tailored education and industry-academia cooperation, and build a virtuous cycle of admission, education and employment — where students' job outcomes become the reason others choose this university — to lead regional industry development by nurturing skilled professionals," President Lee said.
