Former professional baseball player Oh Seung-hwan has said the gold he received from the Samsung Lions during his playing career amounts to more than 1,000 don — a traditional Korean unit of weight roughly equal to 3.75 grams.
Oh made the remarks Monday on "Jjanhan Hyeong," a YouTube entertainment program, where he discussed the bonuses he received throughout his career.
When comedian Jeong Ho-cheol asked what kind of rewards the club gave him each time he set a record, Oh said, "I did receive quite a lot of gold. It adds up."
When fellow guest Yun Seok-min guessed the total was "around 1,000 don," Oh said, "I received more than 1,000 don."
The most eye-catching reward was a solid gold baseball he received for recording his 47th save.
"When I got my 47th save, I received a baseball made of 470 don of pure gold," Oh said. "At the time, it was worth about 35 million won ($26,500)." The ball is now estimated to be worth around 300 million won.
When Kim Byung-hyun quipped that he wished he had received shares instead, Oh said, "Because it came as a ball, I can't sell it." He added that when he recorded his 400th save, the team's president offered him 400 don of gold and asked whether he wanted it in ball form — to which Oh said he asked for gold bars instead.
When Jeong asked whether Oh had received only gold despite playing for Samsung, Oh said he had also received a large number of home appliances.
"When I got the 470-don ball, Samsung Electronics gave me a pamphlet of their home appliances," he said.
