Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Hanul Nuclear Power Plant conducted a full-scale radiation emergency drill for Hanul Unit 4 on Thursday.
Under the Act on Physical Protection of Nuclear Facilities and Radiation Emergency Preparedness, each nuclear power plant is required to hold such a drill once a year.
Officials from the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety and the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences attended the exercise.
Participants simulated scenarios involving a tsunami strike, radioactive material leakage caused by steam generator tube damage, and a loss of both on-site and off-site power. The drill focused on operating low-pressure mobile pump vehicles and assessing projected radiation exposure doses for nearby residents.
Plant chief Lee Yong-hee said the drill provided an opportunity to closely review step-by-step response procedures and systems for radiation emergencies. "We will continue to strengthen our emergency response capabilities through repeated training," Lee added.
