President Lee Jae Myung shares letters on social media, vows to find a solution; minister pledges alternatives
Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Choi Hwi-young has pledged to find solutions after elementary school students wrote to President Lee Jae Myung complaining about the lack of cultural facilities in their neighborhood — a letter the president had already publicly acknowledged.
Choi wrote on social media Monday that the ministry would "create alternatives so that children who lack cultural facilities nearby can also enjoy a cultural life," and asked the students who wrote the letters to "please wait just a little longer."
Earlier that afternoon, President Lee shared the letters on social media, naming the five students from Gibuk Elementary School in Pohang who had written to him. Lee said he had received their letters describing a neighborhood with no movie theater, no performance venue and no art museum, and vowed to "find a way for friends who have difficulty enjoying cultural life due to distance to do so easily."
In the letters Lee shared, the students wrote that reaching a movie theater required a 40-minute car ride or an hour by bus, and said they envied city children they saw on television visiting musicals and exploring museums.
