Round-the-clock monitoring and sterilization using IoT and AI technology targets fine dust and harmful substances to create a healthier welfare environment
Jongno-gu has completed installation of a "smart indoor air quality management system" at the Jongno Senior Welfare Center to protect elderly visitors from health hazards including infectious diseases and fine dust.
At the heart of the system is a combination of IoT sensors and AI technology that continuously detects and analyzes key pollutants around the clock — including ultrafine particulate matter (PM2.5), fine dust (PM10), carbon dioxide (CO₂) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — across the center's main public spaces.
High-precision sensors collect air quality data in real time, and air sterilizers automatically purify the indoor environment by removing odors and fine dust, keeping the facility consistently clean. The system enables proactive, systematic environmental management for elderly visitors with weakened immune systems who spend extended periods at the facility.
One senior who uses the center expressed satisfaction, saying that knowing the air — invisible to the eye — is being systematically managed brings greater peace of mind, and that the indoor environment seems noticeably more comfortable.
A Jongno-gu official said maintaining a safe and healthy indoor environment at welfare facilities where seniors spend much of their day is an essential service. "We will continue to actively leverage smart technology to create comfortable welfare spaces where everyone can feel safe," the official said.
