International standard for automotive parts software reliability; in-house diagnostics and controls embedded in vehicle displays; push to expand into North American automaker market
LG Display announced Monday it has obtained Level 2 (CL2) certification under Automotive SPICE (ASPICE), the international standard for automotive software development. The achievement lays the groundwork for new orders, as the company has now demonstrated its capabilities not only in automotive displays but also in software technology.
LG Display earned the certification by embedding self-developed diagnostic and control functions into displays for vehicle instrument clusters and center fascias. The certification validates the company's software quality and reliability as a core partner in automotive electronics systems.
ASPICE is an international standard created by automakers to evaluate the software development capabilities and reliability of automotive parts suppliers. As the number of electronic control units (ECUs) installed in vehicles has surged, even a single software defect can trigger a serious accident or large-scale recall, making rigorous management from the development stage essential for all related components. ASPICE assesses whether systematic processes are in place and operating throughout the entire automotive software development cycle.
The automotive industry is entering the era of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), shifting rapidly from a hardware-centric to a software-centric model. In-vehicle displays are also evolving beyond simple information screens into sophisticated software platforms encompassing infotainment and vehicle control functions.
LG Display became the first display company to obtain the international automotive cybersecurity engineering standard ISO/SAE 21434, in December last year, and has now added ASPICE certification, further strengthening its competitiveness in the automotive display market.
The company plans to use the certification to sharpen its edge in winning new contracts with automakers in North America and other global markets. Its strategy is to deepen strategic partnerships with customers as software becomes increasingly central to the automotive industry.
"The ASPICE certification recognizes that LG Display's automotive displays have achieved not only hardware excellence but also high-quality software technology capabilities," said Kwon Keuk-sang, head of LG Display's Auto Business Group. "We will continue to build on our differentiated technology to strengthen our leadership in the automotive display market and advance as a technology-driven company that proactively delivers value to customers."
