Restaurant nearly serves cleaning alcohol to pregnant woman instead of water

A Busan restaurant is drawing criticism after a server accidentally brought cleaning alcohol to a table instead of water, nearly causing a pregnant woman to drink it.

The incident was featured in a video posted Saturday to JTBC's "Crime Captain" YouTube channel. It occurred around 10 a.m. on May 23.

A man identified only as A visited the restaurant with his family. After placing their order, a server brought what appeared to be water. As A poured it into a cup and began to drink, he detected a strong smell of alcohol. The server had mistakenly brought cleaning alcohol instead of drinking water.

"Even after just one sip, my stomach burned and I felt dizzy," A said. "The alcohol smell was so strong the moment I drank it that I spat it out immediately."

A had been dining with his pregnant wife, father-in-law and mother-in-law. "I shudder to think what would have happened if my pregnant wife had swallowed the cleaning alcohol," he said.

A said he was disappointed by the restaurant's response after the incident. The owner called him and asked whether it was true that A had threatened to report the matter to the district office and police — acknowledging the server's mistake but focusing on A's reaction rather than offering an apology.

When A said the owner did not appear to be apologizing properly, the owner replied, "How would you like me to apologize? If you want to file a report, go ahead. My employee already said sorry — what more do you want from me?"

A replied that since the owner clearly did not understand, he would go ahead and file a formal complaint. The owner responded, "Fine. Do as you please."

Online commenters reacted with criticism. "A sincere apology was needed," one wrote. "The owner made such a serious mistake and yet chose to be defensive," said another. A third commenter wrote, "If the owner had apologized properly, this never would have been reported — the owner made this worse."
