Gwangju city announced Thursday it will operate a network of rest facilities for mobile workers, including delivery riders, designated drivers, courier workers and visiting service providers.
The facilities are designed to protect the health of workers who spend much of their time outdoors and on the move, making it difficult to take adequate breaks, particularly during heat waves.
The city has established 34 rest stops at publicly accessible locations, including Gwangju City Hall, municipal agencies and subway stations.
For workers who cannot use public facilities during late-night and early-morning hours, the city also operates a 24-hour unmanned rest facility called "Swiso" in the Cheomdan district.
The unmanned facility uses a mobile access system to enhance security and is equipped with air conditioning, heating, a refrigerator and a closed-circuit television monitoring system.
During the heat wave response period, Gwangju city is also stepping up support for mobile workers by distributing bottled water and heat-safety supplies and running campaigns to prevent heat-related illness.
