Moss Tan skips police questioning, cites privacy breach

Moss Tan (Korean name Dan Hyeon-myeong), a Liberty University professor facing charges of defaming President Lee Jae Myung, failed to appear Wednesday for a scheduled police interview.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's cyber investigation unit had summoned Tan to its Jongno-gu office at 10 a.m., but he did not show up. His legal team announced through a media notice around 10:20 a.m. that it was filing a request to reschedule the interview.

In the rescheduling request, the defense team said the police had violated privacy protection measures they had themselves promised, just 20 minutes before the scheduled appearance, and that it was therefore requesting a new date.

"Responsibility for the failure to implement the privacy protection measures as promised lies with your agency," the defense team said.

Tan had expressed a wish not to be exposed to media coverage during his appearance. The scene outside the police office drew a large number of journalists, as well as Tan's supporters and progressive civic groups calling for his arrest and detention.

Tan is accused of making statements at press conferences and other events in the United States last year suggesting that President Lee had been involved in a murder case as a teenager and had been held in a juvenile detention facility.

After Tan entered the country on May 28 and did not respond to summons requests, police applied to the Ministry of Justice for a travel ban. The ministry has barred him from leaving the country through June 30.
