High school student who went missing at Goseong beach found dead four days later

A teenage high school student who went missing at Chodo Beach in Goseong, Gangwon Province, was found dead four days later.

The local fire department said it received a report at around 12:24 p.m. Wednesday that a body had been spotted in seaweed near Chodo Beach.

Coast guard officials and other authorities responded and confirmed the body was that of an 18-year-old student, identified only by the surname initial A, who had gone missing near the beach on June 21.

The student, a resident of Gwangju, had traveled to Goseong over the weekend to take part in a street basketball tournament and visited the nearby beach with friends.

The Sokcho Coast Guard Station received a report at around 9:40 a.m. Sunday that the student had entered the water and been swept away by waves. Authorities have since conducted a search involving the fire department, military, local government and residents.
