Singer gives 10 million won for low-income residents, bringing cumulative total to 165 million won
Singer and actor IU, 33, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, has donated 10 million won ($6,430) to support low-income and vulnerable residents in Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province, where she owns a country home.
According to Yangpyeong-gun, IU has been making regular donations to the county since 2020, contributing to programs that cover living expenses for households in crisis and heating costs for low-income residents.
Including this latest gift, her cumulative donations to the county over roughly six years have reached 165 million won.
Yangpyeong County Chief Jeon Jin-seon thanked IU for her continued support. "I am deeply grateful to IU for cheering on the county without fail over so many years and putting warm-hearted sharing into practice," he said, adding that the county would pursue targeted welfare programs to ensure the funds reach those who need them most.
IU's connection to Yangpyeong-gun began when she purchased a country home there in 2018.
On Aug. 1, 2018, she bought a two-story house in Yangpyeong-gun — with a total floor area of 194 square meters and a plot of 562 square meters — for 2.2 billion won. That November, she purchased six additional adjacent lots totaling 1,524 square meters for 800 million won.
Her agency said at the time that IU bought the property as a weekend retreat where she could relax with family, including her paternal grandmother.
Meanwhile, more than 80 other celebrities are reported to live in the area surrounding IU's home in Yangpyeong-gun.
