A domestic space pharmaceutical startup has been selected for a major deep tech project run by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and will now move into full-scale development of an AI-powered autonomous experimental platform for space-based drug research.
SpaceLynTech announced Wednesday that it has finalized an agreement with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency (TIPA) for the Phase 1 preliminary research stage of the "2026 Deep Tech Challenge Project (DCP) Ecosystem Innovation" program, and will begin developing an autonomous platform for pharmaceutical manufacturing and structural research in microgravity conditions.
The project, led by SpaceLynTech, is formally titled "Development of an Autonomous Platform for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Structural Research Based on Space Microgravity, and Construction of a Space Pharmaceutical Ecosystem Linked to Private Space Stations." The ultimate goal is to move beyond the conventional approach of one-off experiments validating a single protein or disease target in space, and instead build a demand-driven space pharmaceutical research and manufacturing platform that lets pharmaceutical and biotech companies use the space environment on a continuous, repeatable basis.
The project's core differentiator is what it calls "AI-based autonomous operation technology" — a system capable of analyzing data, assessing conditions and responding to anomalies on its own, even within the constrained communications, power and computing resources of a space environment. The plan integrates on-device AI, real-time optical monitoring, sensor-based analysis, and fault detection and response technologies to build a space biotech experimental infrastructure capable of long-term, repeated operation.
The DCP Ecosystem Innovation program, launched for the first time this year, is a large-scale national project in which a leading small or medium-sized enterprise serves as a platform hub, working with universities, research institutes, medical institutions, industry players and investors to drive innovation across an entire industrial ecosystem. SpaceLynTech completed its Phase 1 agreement Tuesday and will use the preliminary research period to pursue proof-of-concept, proof-of-market validation and investment linkage simultaneously, laying the groundwork for entry into Phase 2 research and development. Total government support across both phases reaches up to 20 billion won ($13.1 million), with the full development period running through June 2030 — approximately four years.
The project will be carried out by a large consortium combining industry, academia, research institutes, hospitals and global research organizations. KIST, Piquant and Hanseo University will participate as joint research institutions, while Nota, JW Pharmaceutical and Severance Hospital will handle commissioned research. Mobilint and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States have also joined as partner organizations.
As the platform hub overseeing the entire project and the entity responsible for space demonstration, SpaceLynTech will build a full-cycle collaboration framework spanning real-time optical monitoring, AI autonomous operation, structural validation, drug development and the establishment of medical application guidance for space-manufactured products. The company plans to expand into space contract research organization (space CRO) and space manufacturing services that reflect the actual needs of domestic pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and to demonstrate a phased commercialization pathway leading to the use of private space stations. Advisory board meetings are scheduled from August through early October to refine the research and development direction and commercialization strategy.
"This DCP agreement is an important starting point for advancing the AI-based autonomous space pharmaceutical service platform we have envisioned into an actual preliminary research stage," SpaceLynTech CEO Yoon Hak-soon said. "We will rigorously carry out technology and market validation in Phase 1 and precisely demonstrate the commercialization potential of our space CRO and manufacturing services, building a practical execution foundation for the domestic space biotech industry to enter the global market."
