Apple signs $30b deal with Broadcom to produce 15 billion US-made chips

Apple has signed a long-term deal worth $30 billion with chipmaker Broadcom to produce about 15 billion custom semiconductors, known as ASICs, in the United States — a move seen as aligning with the Donald Trump administration's push to expand domestic manufacturing.

Apple announced Wednesday that it had signed the multiyear agreement with Broadcom to expand its silicon supply chain within the United States.

The deal is the largest contract Apple has struck through its American Manufacturing Program, which it launched last year.

Under the agreement, Broadcom will invest $1.5 billion (about 2.3 trillion won) to expand its production facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, where it will manufacture custom chips for Apple's wireless communications systems.

The two companies have extended their semiconductor partnership through 2031. Apple and Broadcom have jointly developed wireless communications chips since 2023.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company was "proud to expand our investment in American suppliers who share our belief in excellence and innovation," adding that he was "deeply grateful to President Trump and his administration for their support of this important project."

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan also said the two companies "share an unwavering commitment to American innovation" and that he was "thrilled to expand our manufacturing footprint in Fort Collins."

Apple's decision to highlight its US chip production plans — and Cook's direct mention of the president — is widely interpreted as a gesture toward the Trump administration, which has made reviving American manufacturing and the semiconductor industry a cornerstone of its policy agenda.

Trump has repeatedly warned that he could impose additional tariffs on Apple if the company does not move its core production facilities to the United States.

Earlier, Cook held a press conference alongside Trump in August last year and announced plans to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years. At the time, he also presented Trump with a glass commemorative plaque bearing the words "Made in USA."
