Ko Ji-yong, a member of first-generation K-pop group Sechs Kies, has belatedly disclosed that he is divorced.
Ko said Wednesday on his SNS that he and his former wife divorced two years ago. "The divorce was a decision we made to respect each other's paths and fulfill our responsibilities as adults," he said.
He explained why he had waited to share the news, saying he wanted to protect his son and give him enough time to come to terms with the situation and grow up in a stable environment.
He went on to say he would continue to do his best as a father, adding that despite the end of their marriage, the two remain on good terms and support each other.
He closed by asking fans to refrain from personal questions and thanking them for their continued warm support.
Ko debuted with Sechs Kies in 1997 and, alongside H.O.T., helped define the Korean pop music scene in the late 1990s. After the group disbanded in 2000, he launched a business venture. In 2013, he married a specialist in family medicine, and the couple had a son the following year. In 2016, Ko and his family appeared on the KBS 2TV parenting show "Superman Is Back."
