People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok will attend the Liberation Day ceremony on Saturday.
PPP chief spokesperson Park Chung-kwon told reporters at the National Assembly on Tuesday that Jang would attend the Aug. 15 event.
"My understanding is that the decision to attend was made last Thursday and the Ministry of Interior and Safety was notified," Park said. "I have also notified the ministry that I will be attending the Liberation Day event."
Park was responding to remarks made earlier Tuesday by fellow PPP lawmaker Park Jeong-ha on MBC Radio, in which she said Jang had yet to indicate whether he would attend the Liberation Day event. "Even when we criticize the Democratic Party of Korea, we fact-check before we do so," the spokesperson said. "We fact-check when criticizing the opposing party — so using false information to criticize your own party leader is not an appropriate attitude for a member of the party."
Park Jun-tae, chief of staff to the party leader, also weighed in Tuesday afternoon through a press notice, saying the matter "could have been confirmed with a single phone call to the party leader's office." He added that Park Jeong-ha had "invoked the legitimacy of the Republic of Korea without any basis whatsoever," calling the remarks "not a simple mistake but a malicious attack intended to damage the party leader."
Park Jun-tae said "it cannot be normal for a party when one of its own lawmakers devotes herself to attacking the party leader using false information," and called on Park Jeong-ha to "correct the inaccurate reporting herself and take moral and political responsibility."
