Gangwon Province held a meeting of its Future Industry Global City Comprehensive Plan Review Committee, chaired by Governor Woo Sang-ho, with the proposed designation of a forest-use promotion zone around Deungseon Falls on Chuncheon's Samaksan as the main agenda item.
According to Gangwon Province on Tuesday, the committee — a statutory deliberative body on regional development policy established under the Special Act on Gangwon Province — convened as a regular session, the first since the launch of the ninth elected provincial administration. New members received their appointment certificates, and the committee outlined its plans for future operations.
Under the proposed designation, Chuncheon plans to renovate aging facilities around the Samaksan tourist area and restore degraded forest landscapes. The city also intends to develop landscaping features along hiking trails, including a treetop walk and media facade installations, and expand tourism amenities such as restaurants and parking facilities.
Gangwon Province expects the project to go beyond simply expanding tourism facilities, serving as a model for applying forest special provisions that preserve clean forest resources while boosting the local economy.
"As we ease regulations, we will scrutinize even more rigorously whether the changes genuinely help the local economy and whether they pose any risk to the environment or public safety, so that residents feel the results," Governor Woo said.
At earlier committee sessions, members discussed and approved a range of regional development issues using special provisions, including the designation of 20 rural vitalization promotion districts and a forest-use promotion zone at the Goseong Unification Observatory.
