- Korea Institute of Nanotechnology trains semiconductor specialists using public nanofab facilities

A hands-on training program run out of a public nanofabrication facility is drawing attention for tackling two problems at once: youth unemployment and a shortage of skilled workers in the semiconductor industry. More than nine in 10 graduates have landed jobs.
The Korea Institute of Nanotechnology said that over the past eight years, 710 people completed its nano-specialist workforce development and employment support program, of whom 660 went on to find work. The overall job placement rate stands at 92 percent, with a course completion rate of 99.4 percent.
The institute held its "NNFC Connect-8" event Friday to build networks and facilitate technology exchange between program graduates and the semiconductor industry.
The program has been running since 2019 with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT. It targets unemployed graduates and soon-to-be graduates from science and engineering programs, with the goal of producing job-ready specialists who can step directly into semiconductor industry roles — going well beyond conventional classroom instruction.
The centerpiece is a 14-week intensive curriculum that makes full use of the actual semiconductor equipment and facilities at the public nanofab.
Trainees work through the entire process firsthand — from foundational semiconductor coursework to equipment operation and preventive maintenance rotations, process troubleshooting projects, and full device fabrication. The aim is to close the technical gap between university education and real production environments, producing what the institute calls "experienced new hires" who are ready to contribute from day one.
Among all graduates, about 40 percent joined integrated chipmakers and another 40 percent went to mid-sized and smaller semiconductor firms. The remaining 20 percent are working in nano-convergence companies or research and development roles.
The program is also credited with helping ease the broader talent crunch in South Korea's semiconductor ecosystem — not only by supplying specialists to large chipmakers, but also by channeling trained workers to small and mid-sized materials, components and equipment companies that have struggled to recruit.
The Korea Institute of Nanotechnology plans to turn its graduates' professional network into an asset for industry competitiveness. It aims to connect alumni working across integrated chipmakers and foundries — including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix — domestic small and mid-sized materials, components and equipment firms, global semiconductor equipment companies such as ASML, Lam Research, Applied Materials and TEL, and semiconductor operations in the United States, Taiwan, Japan and Germany, all under a single network.
Training and employment data will be consolidated into a "semiconductor talent ecosystem dashboard." The institute plans to systematically track graduate distribution by cohort, employer and job function, along with hiring trends at small and mid-sized firms, overseas placement figures and mentoring histories — using the data to refine future curricula and inform semiconductor workforce policy.
Park Heung-su, director of the Korea Institute of Nanotechnology, said training the specialists that industry needs within the institute's high-quality educational environment "translates into competitiveness not just for individual companies, but for a core national industry." He added that the institute would "work to provide opportunities for students and young people who need employment, and to develop talent that strengthens national and regional industrial competitiveness."
