Day and night programs run Sept. 8–19 to showcase heritage value
Hands-on activities include imagining ancient lifestyles and making petroglyphs
The 2026 World Heritage Festival, hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration and organized by the Korea Heritage Promotion Agency, will be held Sept. 8–19 at the Bangucheon Petroglyphs site, spanning Eonyang-eup and Dudong-myeon in Ulju-gun, Ulsan.
The Ulsan Petroglyphs Museum and the Korea Heritage Promotion Agency will run day and night programs to raise awareness of the value of the Bangucheon Petroglyphs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During the day, a program titled "Petroglyph Stories We Discovered" will be held for toddlers and lower-grade elementary school students at the Ulsan Petroglyphs Museum at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the festival period. The program consists of a sound quiz identifying animal calls depicted in the petroglyphs, finding animals in the petroglyphs, imagining the lifestyle of ancient people, and making petroglyphs.
At night, from Tuesday through Saturday, "Bangudae Night Journey: Beneath the Moon, Bangudae" will begin with an exhibition tour at the Ulsan Petroglyphs Museum at 7 p.m. before participants travel to the Bangudae Petroglyphs site in Daegok-ri, Eonyang-eup, Ulju-gun, for a series of hands-on experiences.
Participants will walk a lit wooden-deck path and a bamboo forest path while listening to commentary, then arrive at the Bangudae Petroglyphs to watch a media arts performance combining dance and a projected facade display.
Meanwhile, this year's World Heritage Festival will also be held at three other sites: the Gaya Tumuli (Aug. 28–Sept. 10), the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes (Oct. 3–18), and the Andong Hahoe Village, Bongjeongsa Temple, Dosanseowon Confucian Academy and Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy (Oct. 9–25).
