Trump to visit NYC mayor's residence for third meeting with political rival Mamdani

US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are set to meet for the third time in New York on Monday (local time). The two men traded sharp attacks during last year's mayoral race and occupy opposite ends of the political spectrum, but their previous two encounters were unexpectedly warm — making this latest meeting one to watch for signs of concrete cooperation.

According to New York City, Trump will visit Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence, on Monday to meet with Mamdani.

The city said the meeting "will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers," but did not disclose a specific agenda.

Trump is traveling to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, which opens Tuesday. He arranged the separate meeting with Mamdani ahead of that schedule.

This will be their third meeting. Mamdani first visited the White House to meet Trump in November last year, while he was still mayor-elect. He returned for a second meeting in February this year, after taking office.

The two men make for an unlikely pair politically. Trump has maintained hard-line stances on immigration and cultural policy, while Mamdani is a self-described democratic socialist with a progressive record — together they represent perhaps the sharpest ideological divide in American politics today.

During last year's New York mayoral race, the two clashed directly, trading pointed criticism at each other.

Their actual meetings, however, struck a different tone. Both previous encounters proceeded in a friendly atmosphere, defying expectations. The February meeting in particular went beyond political rivalry, with the two discussing housing development projects in New York and exploring the possibility of substantive cooperation.

This time, Trump is coming to Mamdani's residence. Attention is now on whether the third meeting will sustain that cooperative tone — on housing and other issues between New York City and the federal government.
