Endocrinologist Woo Chang-yun, whose medical content channel has about 1.43 million subscribers, will speak at the Seodaemun Celebrity Lecture on Wednesday on how diet, sleep, stress and hormones affect weight — and how to maintain healthy metabolism through the relationship between visceral fat, blood sugar, insulin and appetite.
A health lecture for residents looking to shed weight gained over the chuseok holiday or restore their disrupted daily routines is set to take place this week.
Seodaemun-gu will host a celebrity lecture titled "A Body That Doesn't Gain Weight: The Start of a Healthy Life" on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the grand hall on the sixth floor of the district office. The speaker is Woo Chang-yun, an endocrinologist and author of the bestselling book "A Body That Doesn't Gain Weight."
The lecture goes beyond explaining how to lose weight, focusing instead on why the body gains weight and how its overall health changes — examined through the lens of metabolism.
Woo plans to explain in accessible terms how a range of everyday factors — not just diet and physical activity, but also sleep, stress and hormones — interact with one another and drive changes in weight and health.
Starting from the question of why people keep gaining weight, the talk will examine the relationship between visceral fat, blood sugar, insulin and appetite. Woo will also cover how everyday habits such as sleep deprivation, chronic stress and consumption of ultra-processed foods affect metabolism, and introduce practical strategies that can be applied in daily life.
Woo previously served as a professor of internal medicine at Asan Medical Center and now focuses his practice on obesity and metabolic disorders. He also reaches a wide public audience through "Doctor Friends," a medical content channel with about 1.43 million subscribers, where he explains diseases, healthy habits and the latest medical developments in plain language.
The lecture is expected to give participants a chance to reflect on the increased food intake and reduced physical activity typical of the holiday period, and to think about how to manage their eating, sleep and exercise habits after returning to daily life.
Seodaemun-gu holds a celebrity lecture series every month, inviting experts from various fields to give residents access to knowledge and fresh perspectives across a wide range of subjects.
"Health begins not with grand resolutions but with the small daily habits of eating, sleeping and moving," Seodaemun-gu District Mayor Park Woon-ki said. "I hope this lecture gives residents a chance to truly understand their own bodies and rebuild a healthier daily routine."
The Seodaemun Celebrity Lecture is open to all residents. Registration is available through the district office website's notice board, by scanning the QR code on the poster, or by calling the Seodaemun-gu District Office's Administrative Support Division.
