Ulsan climate action students win award at National Assembly roundtable

Ten student representatives from the Climate Action Practice Group, run by the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education, attended the "2026 Challenge Red Bell National Assembly Roundtable" at the National Assembly Members' Office Building on Tuesday, sharing their hands-on experiences with students from across the country and receiving an Outstanding Activity Award.

The Climate Action Practice Group is a student-led climate program in which participants identify and investigate climate and environmental problems in their schools and communities, then channel their findings into awareness campaigns, direct action and policy proposals. The Ulsan education office held a student climate policy roundtable in August, bringing together about 100 students and producing 15 jointly developed policy proposals.

At the National Assembly roundtable, students from the "Seoyeo Rangers" group at Ulsan Seoyeo Girls' Middle School and the "Earth Star Three" group at Samnam Elementary School received the Save the Children Director General Award — the Outstanding Activity Award — for identifying climate and environmental problems in their schools and communities and taking direct action to address them.

The Seoyeo Rangers ran awareness campaigns to improve recycling practices on campus and promoted the use of cups while brushing teeth, drawing broad participation from the school community. The Earth Star Three group visited apartment recycling facilities in their neighborhood to survey the state of household waste disposal and recycling, then conducted interviews with building management staff and analyzed data to develop solutions for resource circulation and waste reduction.

An official from the Ulsan education office said the award recognized not just the students' learning about the climate crisis, but the entire process through which they identified problems in their schools and communities, investigated them and drove real change.
