When their eyes meet onstage, an inexplicable charge fills the air — taut tension that allows no margin for error, and a fluid chemistry built on absolute trust. Two of Korean musical theater's most beloved stars, Cho Seung-woo and Jeon Mi-do, are finally returning to the stage together. A decade after the pair sparked a sensation with their darkly captivating "cruel thriller," they will once again take up the blood-stained razor and the pie roller.
According to producer Ode Company on Tuesday, the musical "Sweeney Todd" will open Dec. 4 at the D-Cube Link Art Center, marking the 10th anniversary of its Korean premiere.
The casting is dazzling. The anniversary production marks the return of Cho and Jeon, whose partnership stretches back 14 years. The two first shared a stage in the 2012 musical "Doctor Zhivago," then reunited in 2015 as Don Quixote and Aldonza in "Man of La Mancha," and again that same year in the 15th-anniversary run of "Werther" — weaving a fever-pitched tragic romance as Werther and Lotte.
Their most audacious collaboration came with "Sweeney Todd" in 2016. Cho played the barber consumed by murderous vengeance while Jeon brought to life the scheming yet oddly endearing Mrs. Lovett, transforming the grotesque premise of human-meat pies into a razor-sharp black comedy. Their rapid-fire exchange of rhymes and perfectly timed banter in the signature number "A Little Priest" is widely regarded as one of the defining moments in Korean musical theater history. The production also proved a turning point for Jeon, who took home the lead actress award at the inaugural Korean Musical Awards.
Ten years on, their reunion carries even greater weight. Jeon has since become a household name through the tvN drama series "Hospital Playlist," while Cho has cemented his reputation as an irreplaceable performer across genres. For Cho, this marks his first return to the show in seven years.
The other major surprise of the anniversary production is the addition of Kim So-hyun, widely regarded as one of Korean musical theater's reigning divas. Having long defined the archetype of the regal empress and the pure-hearted prima donna through productions such as "The Phantom of the Opera," "Elisabeth," "Empress Myeongseong" and "Marie Antoinette," Kim is now making a radical departure — taking on the role of Mrs. Lovett in a complete break from her two-decade performance trajectory. Seeing the actress long synonymous with elegance embody grotesque greed and brazen eccentricity is set to be the freshest and most striking draw of the season. Joining her is Park Ji-yeon, an actor known for chameleonic range and deep character immersion, who will portray a second Mrs. Lovett — giving the production three distinct takes on the role.
The lineup for Sweeney Todd is equally formidable. Kang Pil-seok, known among fans as "Phil Todd" for his meticulous emotional depth, returns to bring brooding gravitas alongside Cho. Baritone Kim Ju-taek, who has demonstrated commanding vocal power across international opera stages and major domestic musicals, joins the cast as a new Todd.
The roles of Judge Turpin — the corrupt, power-hungry villain at the heart of the tragedy — go to Seo Young-ju, Kim Dae-jong and Ji Hyun-jun, each bringing a sharp edge to the antagonist. Yoon Seung-woo and Choi Jae-woong are cast as Anthony, the earnest young sailor who anchors the story's romantic subplot, while Hwang Sun-jong and Kang Byung-hoon take on Tobias, the boy whose blind devotion to Mrs. Lovett carries its own tragic arc. Newcomers Seong Min-jae and Jang Hye-rin will share the role of Johanna, Todd's imprisoned daughter.
Producer Shin Chun-su said the team's focus would be on recapturing the chilling tension of the original production and fully realizing the bold, sharp musical essence that defines Stephen Sondheim's work, rather than simply marking a milestone. "We will deliver the most complete production yet through the harmony of the legends who built this history and the new cast who will breathe fresh energy into it," he said. The show opens Dec. 4.
