Daegu Catholic University held the 18th Simon Scholarship ceremony Wednesday at its career and entrepreneurship center on campus, presenting 55 students with 1 million won ($744) each for a total of 55 million won.
The Simon Scholarship was established by Monsignor Jeong Eun-gyu to carry on the legacy of his late father, Jeong Haeng-don, an independence movement activist and educator.
The ceremony opened with a video introducing the scholarship and Monsignor Jeong's philanthropic activities, after which university President Seong Han-gi presented scholarship certificates to the recipients.
Jo Yu-bin, an art therapy student and representative of the scholarship recipients, read a letter of gratitude on behalf of her peers. The handwritten thank-you letters from all the students were entrusted to President Seong to be delivered to Monsignor Jeong.
"The Simon Scholarship embodies the spirit of Jeong Haeng-don, who devoted himself to his country and neighbors, and the vision of Monsignor Jeong Eun-gyu, who has carried that spirit forward through educational giving," Seong said. "I hope the recipients will take this spirit to heart, grow in their own paths, and one day pass on that generosity to others."
