Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il said Wednesday that while the world holds many beautiful and worthwhile things, few are as meaningful as helping children grow up bright and healthy, discover their dreams and develop into outstanding individuals.
Yongin city held a performance Wednesday at Maru Hall of the Yongin Culture and Arts Center, where children enrolled in the Dream Start program showcased the skills they have developed. The event was titled "Dream Fly Season 2."
Held under the theme "A second story of children soaring toward their dreams," the performance was designed to help Dream Start children discover their talents through the arts and build a sense of achievement and confidence by taking the stage themselves.
About 150 people attended, including Mayor Lee, Dream Start children and their families, and program supporters.
Before the performance, Lee presented certificates of appreciation to three organizations and three individuals who have supported the growth and aspirations of Dream Start children.
The three organizations recognized were Yongin Hankuk University of Foreign Studies High School, Yongin Hanbit Lions Club and the children and youth development center run by Gangnam University's industry-academic cooperation foundation.
The three individual honorees were Jung Yun-ho, head of Caribbean Camp Caravan Pension; Kim Bong-un, head of Cheongjungwon Aisarang; and Lee Jeong-gyeong, director of Marpe Music Academy.
The honorees supported the children's development through a range of activities, including running mentoring camps, providing regular donations, conducting child-related assessments and professional consultations, and offering accommodation vouchers, snacks and music lessons.
On stage that day, 24 children participating in Dream Plus Academy — Dream Start's regular arts education program — performed a musical, K-pop dance routines and a band set.
The children had been enrolled since March in programs tailored to their individual interests and talents, training in vocal technique, acting, choreography and instrumental performance. They brought those skills to the stage Wednesday, delighting and moving the audience.
