Taihan Cable & Solution announced Thursday that members of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee visited the London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2) project site in London on Monday (local time).
The visit was aimed at reviewing the progress of a successful Korean overseas infrastructure project and examining the company's achievements in international expansion, as well as its role as an example of South Korea-UK economic cooperation.
Attending the site visit were Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers Hong Ki-won, Jung Chung-rae, Kim Young-ho and Lee Jae-gang, People Power Party lawmakers Kwon Young-se and Ahn Cheol-soo, and Rebuilding Korea Party lawmaker Kim Jun-hyung. Also present were Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee Senior Researcher Yeon Gwang-seok, South Korean Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kim Heung-jong, Ambassador to Ireland Kang Ju-yeon and commercial attache to the UK Kim Bo-yeon.
Taihan Cable & Solution briefed attendees on the LPT2 project's scope and progress, and walked them through key construction processes and on-site operations.
LPT2 is a large-scale project led by UK grid operator National Grid to build underground tunnels beneath central London and install ultra-high-voltage power cables in response to growing electricity demand in the city.
Taihan Cable & Solution is responsible for the full scope of work on the project, from supplying 400-kilovolt (kV) ultra-high-voltage cables and accessories to designing and engineering the cable system.
The United Kingdom is considered one of the company's key overseas markets, given sustained infrastructure investment driven by aging grid replacement and rising power demand. In the first half of this year alone, Taihan Cable & Solution secured four new contracts in the UK worth about 100 billion won ($74.7 million).
The visiting lawmakers urged the company to "build on the technology and experience accumulated over many years as South Korea's first cable manufacturer to raise the country's standing in global markets and contribute to national economic development."
A Taihan Cable & Solution official said the company would "continue to strengthen its competitiveness in the global power infrastructure market and expand project opportunities, drawing on the business experience and customer trust built up in the local market."
