'Aging City Innovation Forum' policy seminar
Conflict and information gaps flagged in redevelopment process
The Busan City Council's lawmaker research group, the Aging City Innovation Forum, held a policy seminar Wednesday at the council's main conference room to explore policy and regulatory improvements for aging planned-city redevelopment.
The seminar, attended by forum members, relevant Busan city officials and outside experts, raised concerns about resident conflicts and information shortfalls that can arise during redevelopment projects. Participants argued that the current practice of holding resident briefings only after redevelopment zones are finalized should be abandoned in favor of providing residents with sufficient information and gathering their input from the earliest stages of a project.
Attendees also proposed that aging apartment complexes near designated redevelopment zones be made eligible for inclusion in such projects, and that Busan city develop a support framework to help residents cover costs they must bear during the redevelopment process.
"Redeveloping aging planned cities goes beyond simply improving residential environments — it is a critical task for raising Busan's future urban competitiveness and the quality of life of its citizens," said Kim Tae-hee, the forum's representative lawmaker. "Busan city must play an active role in ensuring that residents' opinions are fully reflected in the process and that unnecessary conflicts do not arise."
