The Red Cross Volunteer Corps of Daegu Health University joined the Daegu New Palgong Rotary Club of Rotary International District 3700 on Saturday for a coal-briquette charity drive in the Bisan-dong area of Seo-gu, Daegu.
About 200 university faculty, staff and students, along with Rotary Club members, delivered 5,000 coal briquettes to low-income households in the district.
The event was organized to help vulnerable neighbors get through the winter without the burden of high heating costs and to promote a culture of sharing and solidarity.
Five additional Rotary clubs under District 3700 — North Daegu, Seongju Chamoe, Daegu Murim, Cosmos and Dongmyeong — also provided sponsorship.
Participants visited households recommended by the Coal Briquette Sharing Movement headquarters and the Seo-gu district office, delivering briquettes in small groups.
In narrow alleyways, volunteers passed briquettes hand to hand, while on wider paths they used handcarts to carry loads directly to residents' doors.
The university has consistently carried out community service activities, including the annual briquette drive, through its Red Cross Volunteer Corps. Students from Prime, an honors student club under the DHC program, also took part.
Daegu Health University President Nam Sung-hee said the event holds special significance as it marks the 17th consecutive year that students and staff have taken part. "Going forward, we will continue to walk alongside the community — looking out for neighbors in need and giving students the chance to learn the values of sharing and community firsthand," Nam said.
