The Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council announced Tuesday that it is running the 2026 Seoul Metropolitan Superintendent's Tournament across 23 sports in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, as part of efforts to promote school athletics and develop student athletes.
Open to elementary, middle and high school students in Seoul, the tournament began with squash on Aug. 1 and has since completed 11 events, including hockey, ssireum, swimming, boxing and kendo. The remaining 12 sports will be held in sequence this month, starting with badminton on Saturday.
The per-sport superintendent's tournament was suspended in 2019 due to administrative burdens on schools, then revived last year after a six-year hiatus. The Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education signed an MOU in July last year, agreeing to cooperate on tournament operations, support for school athletic programs and coach development.
Through the tournament, the sports council aims to expand competitive opportunities for student athletes and strengthen the development base for foundational and underrepresented sports.
"We hope the superintendent's tournament will become a regular annual fixture that gives students more opportunities to compete," a Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council official said.
