Samwon Gallery in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, is hosting a two-person exhibition by Shin Jong-min and Hwang Won-hae titled "Layered On" through Dec. 4. The show explores architectural structures, surfaces and fragments of memory through the two artists' distinct visual languages, tracing their work as it moves between structure and image, flatness and volume, departing from the textures of everyday environments.
Hwang extends the structures found in painting into actual space, then returns to the flat surface to probe depth through layering, while Shin begins with a flat image, builds it into three dimensions and folds that volume back into the plane. The added layers do not seal smoothly — gaps remain between modules, and intervals persist between one stratum and the next. Rather than focusing on finished surfaces, the exhibition draws attention to the seams where different elements meet, offering a fresh way to consider the accumulated memory and time embedded there, and the meaning of imperfect gaps.
