One below-ground and two above-ground floors, total floor area 576.66 square meters; 14 parking spaces and a shared kitchen among the amenities. Completion ceremony set for 2 p.m. Tuesday; official operations begin Nov. 23.
Jongno-gu has built a new public parking facility in the densely residential alleyways of Sinyeong-dong to ease a chronic parking shortage in the neighborhood.
The district will hold a completion ceremony for the Sinyeong-dong public parking facility and community amenity building at 2 p.m. Tuesday at 219-11 Sinyeong-dong. The facility is designed to relieve recurring parking congestion and daily inconvenience along the narrow lanes while serving as an open community space for residents to meet and interact.
Official operations begin Nov. 23. The building spans one below-ground and two above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 576.66 square meters. The basement and first floors together provide 14 parking spaces — 11 standard, one reserved for people with disabilities and two family-friendly spaces.
The facility will operate unmanned around the clock, accommodating both resident-priority parking and visitor parking. The second floor houses a shared kitchen and a multipurpose room for residents' everyday use.
The project traces its origins to a feasibility study commissioned in 2019. The district completed basic and detailed design work in 2021, broke ground in May 2023 and finished all construction this month. The addition of parking spaces alongside community amenities is expected to improve parking conditions and raise the overall quality of the residential environment.
Jongno-gu has been moving quickly to address downtown parking shortages beyond Sinyeong-dong. Last year, the district completed three public parking facilities in succession — Samcheong No. 1 Public Parking Lot (178 spaces) in May, Changsin Sodam Public Parking Lot (176 spaces) in October and Okin No. 1 Public Parking Lot (90 spaces) in December.
The district is also deepening cooperation with the private sector. Since January, Jongno-gu has opened the ancillary parking lots of three facilities — including Sungkyunkwan University — to residents. The Sungkyunkwan University lot offers resident-priority parking around the clock for 60,000 won ($45) a month, while the Lucky Pyeongchang Villa and Myeonggwang Church lots, open on weekdays only, are available free of charge.
District Mayor Yoo Chan-jong said the district would manage the facility carefully so residents can use it comfortably at any time, and would ensure that the shared private lots remain convenient for users.
