Financial Services Commission launches private AI security advisory panel

The Financial Services Commission announced Sunday that it has launched a private technology advisory panel to address security threats posed by high-performance AI.

The panel was established as a follow-up to the commission's plan for countering AI-related financial sector security threats, released May 26, to ensure timely expert advice on AI, cybersecurity and regulatory policy.

The advisory panel comprises seven specialists — four from academia and three from the legal community — with deep expertise in AI, security and regulatory systems. It will operate through December, with the option to extend if needed. The panel will advise on key issues including anticipated risks from recent high-performance AI systems such as Anthropic's "Mitos," and the development of institutional frameworks to help the financial sector build effective security systems.

Particularly regarding the network separation deregulation policy, the panel will advise on reviewing detailed implementation measures, key management priorities during AI testing, alternative security technologies, and assessments of financial firms' preparedness. Earlier, the commission determined that the cyber threat environment is growing more sophisticated with the advancement of high-performance AI, and decided to lift network separation regulations for one year for financial institutions that meet certain capability standards and use AI solely for security purposes.

Yoo Young-jun, the commission's director general for digital financial policy, said at the panel's inaugural meeting that the commission would "carefully craft policies to help the financial sector build AI-based security frameworks and accelerate AI transformation."
