4 dead, 2 injured in explosion at Hanwha Aerospace factory in Daejeon

An explosion at the Hanwha Aerospace factory in Oesamdong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, killed four people and injured two others Sunday.

According to police, fire department authorities and Yonhap, the blast occurred at 10:59 a.m. at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant, prompting emergency calls to 119.

More than 30 calls flooded the 119 emergency line around the same time, with callers reporting that they had heard an explosion and seen heavy smoke.

Four people have been confirmed dead, and two others sustained full-body burns. Fire department authorities said one additional person evacuated on their own.

Fire authorities issued a Level 1 emergency response at around 11:17 a.m. and brought the fire under initial control within 50 minutes of the blast.

Police and fire authorities believe the explosion originated on the first floor of the factory from an as-yet-unknown cause. They plan to investigate the full extent of casualties and determine the cause once the fire is fully extinguished.

Sunday's explosion is the third such incident at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant.

In May 2018, an explosion at the site killed two workers on the spot and three more who later died while receiving treatment for severe burns. In February 2019, a blast and fire in the propellant demolding room of Building 70 at the Daejeon plant killed three workers inside.
