Japanese idol group Arashi wraps up 26-year run

Japanese idol group Arashi has officially brought its 26-year career to a close.

According to NHK and other outlets, the group held its final concert at Tokyo Dome on Sunday, formally ending its run.

Arashi debuted in 1999 as a five-member male idol group and rose to the top of the Japanese pop scene with a string of hits including "Love So Sweet," "One Love," "Happiness" and "Monster."

The group cemented its status as one of Japan's most enduring acts by appearing on NHK's year-end music program "Kohaku Uta Gassen" for 12 consecutive years starting in 2009.

Comprising Ohno Satoshi, Sakurai Sho, Aiba Masaki, Ninomiya Kazunari and Matsumoto Jun, Arashi kept its members active beyond the group itself — most appeared regularly in drama series and variety programs throughout their careers.

The group announced a hiatus at the end of 2020, then in May last year revealed plans for a farewell concert tour, signaling its permanent disbandment.

True to that announcement, Arashi held 15 concerts across Japan from March through Sunday, wrapping up its 26-year career with an encore performance in Tokyo.
