Trump says US-Iran truce MOU could be reached within a week

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism that Washington and Tehran are in the final stretch of end-of-war negotiations, saying the two sides could agree on a truce memorandum of understanding within a week.

Speaking by phone with ABC News on Sunday, Trump was asked when he expected the MOU with Iran to be finalized and agreed upon. "I think within the next week you'll be talking about it," he said, according to the network.

The remarks came amid Iran's recent claim that it had suspended negotiations with the United States over Israel's attacks on Lebanon, suggesting Trump still sees a deal as within reach.

However, he acknowledged that outstanding issues remain. "There are still a few things that have to be worked out," he said, indicating that a final agreement has not yet been reached.

The truce MOU under discussion is reported to include a 60-day extension of the ceasefire and full passage rights for civilian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

A deal has proven elusive, however, as Trump has set firm red lines: Iran must be prohibited from developing nuclear weapons, and highly enriched uranium buried in Iran must be excavated and removed under U.S. leadership.
